1.Sexual Image of Actresses:
In the film industry, there is a tendency to showcase actresses with some sex appeal. The costumes are chosen in such a way so that they look sexually appealing. This is primarily done to catch the attention of the male audience. Not only in films but also in photo shoots, magazines, and films female characters are made to wear sexually appealing dresses so that they look more attractive to the male audience.
The term “Casting Couch” is used to refer to a system where an aspiring actress is asked to offer some sexual pleasure in exchange for some promising role in a movie or TV show. Several actresses of Bollywood have recently come out and shared their experience of casting couch and sexual harassment that they faced in the past. Some of the actresses who have shared their experience of casting couch include TV actress Shilpa Shinde, Bollywood actress Kangana Ranaut, aspiring actress Sherlyn Chopra, and Big Boss 2 contestant Payal Rastogi etc.
3.Gender Pay Gap:
The gender pay gap is perhaps one of the biggest issues the industry is facing right now. Actresses are paid much less than their male counterpart for the same role they play in a given movie. Several actors and actresses have strongly objected to the practice. People who have spoken against the practice includes Shah Rukh Khan, Amir Khan, Kajol, Varun Dhawan, and Alia Bhatt.
4.Buying Awards By Big Stars:
In one of the most shocking revelation famous Bollywood actor Rishi Kapoor has revealed in his biography named “Khullam Khulla.” that he actually bought the Filmfare Award for the best actor way back in 1963 for the film “Bobby.” In that category, he was competing with Amitabh Bachchan for his film Zanjeer. However, Rishi admitted that he committed a mistake which he shouldn’t have done. But the entire episode goes on to establish the fact that in some cases awards are up for sale and can be bought by big stars if they want to.
There are many cases where an actress in spite of possessing a very nice looks resort to cosmetic surgery so that she would look glamorous and also could make up for some of the imperfections that they might be having. Famous Bollywood actress Priyanka Chopra is said to have gone through several plastic surgeries to enhance her beauty. Actress Anushka Sharma has also done the same to enhance her beauty. There are several other actresses in Bollywood who have done plastic surgeries to make them look more and more glamorous.
6.Racism in Bollywood:
Racism is something which is known to have been very much prevalent in the west but one of the most shocking facts is that it is also very much prevalent in our society and the Bollywood is not an exception. Some of the actors like Nawazuddin Siddiqui have faced racism issue as some of the casting directors have refused to cast him in their film simply because of his skin color.
- A flop means the death of an actor:
There are hundreds of people who move to Mumbai with the dream of becoming a Bollywood actor but very few of them get a chance. Even those who ultimately manage to get a chance fail to survive if they produce back to back flop films. There are a number of instances where some of the actors had an abrupt ending of their career in Bollywood as they failed to produce any hit film. One such example is actor Adhyayan Suman who is nowhere to be seen after his debut film “Haal-E-Dil”(2008).
8.The monopoly of Big Actors:
There is no denying of the fact that the big actors have established a kind of monopoly in the industry. They sometimes take undue advantage of their influence in the industry. This happens in the matters of casting, selection of roles, selection of scenes and even in the selection of release date of the film. The big actors always get priority in these matters and they never hesitate to take full advantage of that.
9.Films financed by underworld:
This is one of the dirtiest and darkest realities of Bollywood. It is alleged that there are some films which have been financed by the underworld. One such allegation was made for the film “Chori Chori Chupke Chupke” where it was alleged that the film was financed by Chota Shakil who was the main person belonging to the gang of famous underworld don Dawood Ibrahim.
- After losing the Stardom, actors who died in poverty:
There are a number of instances where many actors faced an acute financial problem when they lost their stardom. Many popular actors of yesteryears have faced this problem. The famous actress Achala Sachdev died in a very poor situation when she was completely ignored by his son and daughter as well as people in the industry. Some other people who met with the same fate include Praveen Babai, A.K Hangal, Bharat Bhushan and Bhagwan Dada.
